With the summer coming to an end it is time to start looking at how you can prepare your fencing for the colder, wetter months ahead. Here are some useful tips that will help you.

1) Check the stability of fence posts

The reason so many fences fall over in autumn and winter is that the ground gets more saturated and becomes softer. When this happens it may no longer be able to support the weight of the fence. You should check posts before the wet weather comes. If they are not secure use some additional post mix.

2) Replace or repair broken panels

It is a good idea to do repairs or replacements now before the weather gets colder. This will help to prevent damage from spreading and the job will be easier when it is still dry. Throughout the autumn and winter keep an eye on the fence and stay on top of any damage, repairing it as soon as possible.

3) Treat the timber

Cold, wet, and windy weather can cause fences to wear much faster. One of the best ways to protect them is to add a protective coating, whether it is a preservative, a stain or paint. Add the new coat when the weather is still good and it will dry much faster. Remember to choose a treatment that is safe for people, pets, and the environment.

4) Maintain trees

Overhanging branches can cause a surprising amount of damage to your fence. These limbs will collect moisture and snow, allowing it to drip down onto the fencing and keeping it wet for longer. This can result in faster deterioration. If the weight becomes too great the branches could also snap and fall onto the fence, causing all kinds of damage. Trim the limbs early and keep them cleared.
