"How much will it cost?" is the first question most people ask about composite decking, and it's the one most suppliers avoid answering. So here are our real numbers, based on our current prices as of October 2026.
Below, we will break down what composite decking boards cost per square metre, what else you need to budget for, and how the cost compares with timber decking.
How much does composite decking cost in the UK?
Composite decking boards cost around £39 per m² at Hillsborough Fencing for our standard HillDeck boards. This is based on 2.23 boards per m² when installed, with each board size around 150 mm x 2900 mm x 25 mm.
Our 3D Woodgrain boards cost around £43.50 per m² at Hillsborough Fencing. This is based on a board size of 150 mm x 2900 mm x 25 mm and 2.23 boards per m² when installed.
However, the boards are only part of the cost. Once you add the frame to hold your decking, clips, trims and fitting, composite decking in the UK usually costs between £90 and £200 per m². You will likely see higher costs for raised decks, groundwork and more complex designs.
These figures are correct at the time and will shift slightly depending on product prices.
If you’re not confident building your own decking, we recommend getting your decking fitted by a professional. They will be able to give you a full breakdown of the cost for each section and will make sure your decking is built to last.

Composite decking board prices per m²
All our composite deck boards are 150 mm wide, 25 mm thick and made from recycled wood and plastic. This gives you great anti-Slip resistance and low moisture absorption and is a good upgrade on traditional timber decking.
At Hillsborough Fencing in Sheffield, you will need 2.23 boards to cover one square metre, which is how we work out the price of our decking per m².
HillDeck Composite Decking (from £39 per m²)
The standard composite decking boards cost £17.49 for a 2.9 m length. They come in three colours: black, chocolate or stone grey.
The HillDeck composite decking is the lowest-cost option we have at Hillsborough Fencing. That makes them perfect if you want a low-maintenance decking without paying for a wood-effect finish.
HillDeck 3D Woodgrain Composite Decking (from around £43.50 per m²)
The HillDeck 3D Woodgrain composite decking boards start at £19.50 for a 2.9m length. They come in 3 colours: chocolate, dark grey or stone grey.
Unlike our standard composite decking, our 3D Woodgrain boards come with a textured woodgrain that looks more like real timber and gives you more grip underfoot in wet weather.
Our Woodgrain Composite Decking is better for those looking to make bigger decking areas, as they come in 4.8 m lengths, which means fewer joins.
What else do you need to budget for when building a deck?
When building a deck in your garden, the highest cost will be the decking boards themselves. But when you're pricing up how much a deck would cost for your garden, make sure to consider:
- Framing made from pressure-treated timber that your deck boards will sit on. You will need to price up the timber for the frame from our decking framing range, plus decking tape (from £21.99) to protect the tops of the joists from water damage.
- Hidden T-clips that will hold the boards down without screws showing through the surface, plus start and finish clips for the first and last boards.
- Skirting or bullnose boards (from £24.33) to cover the edges of the deck frame, and L trim or angle trim to finish corners off.
- The delivery of your decking if you're not collecting it. At Hillsborough Fencing, we charge £20 for Sheffield Zone 1 and £35 for Zone 2, or you can use our click and collect service for free.
- Finally fitting. If you are building your own decking, you can ignore this point. UK cost guides currently put the cost of fitting composite decking at roughly £40 to £90 per m². This will change depending on your location, the size of your deck and any features you add.

Example decking price: boards for a 5m × 3m deck
For our standard HillDeck composite decking, you will need 15 m². Which, when you multiply that by 2.33, you will get a total of 35 boards.
We always recommend adding around 10% depending on the size for any offcuts, so that would take your total to 39 boards.
- In our standard HillDeck, that's around £665 for the boards.
- In 3D Woodgrain, it's around £741.00 for the boards.
- You then need to cost up the frame, clips, trims and fitting to add to the price of the boards.
To work out how much it would cost for your decking, call us with your measurements, and we'll work it out for you. This will stop you over-ordering and help you save as much money as possible.
Is composite decking more expensive than timber?
Yes. At the start, composite decking will cost more than buying traditional timber decking.
Our 120mm × 28mm tanalised timber deck boards are £4.85 per board and start at 1.8m long. At this length, this works out to around £22 per m². Composite boards cost roughly twice as much to buy as traditional timber boards.
The frame underneath your timber decking and composite decking is the same, so that part would cost the same. However, over time timber deck boards need a coat of stain or decking oil every year or two to keep water out.
If you look after your timber decking, you can usually make it last 10 to 15 years. Composite boards don't need staining or oiling and only need a wash with warm soapy water, so composite decking typically lasts over 25 years.

What makes composite decking cost more or less?
The cost of 2 decking projects can be completely different, as there are many factors that will either increase or decrease the overall cost of your composite decking.
- Board type
At Hillsborough Fencing, there’s only around £2 for a board between our two composite ranges. But across the UK market, solid and capped boards can cost more than twice as much as standard ones.
The actual price of the boards themselves will change depending on the quality. The higher the quality, the longer it will last and the more money you will save in the long run.
- Height and shape
A flat deck on ground level is cheaper to build than a raised deck in an uneven garden or a deck that is made across multiple levels. The size and shape of your decking will have the biggest influence on the overall cost of your project. The bigger and more complex you go, the more expensive it will become.
- Added extras
Added extras like stairs, lighting, composite balustrades and furniture will all make your decking cost more. Some of these are optional, but if your deck will be more than 600 mm off the ground, building regulations in England require a guardrail or balustrade around it for safety.
How to keep the cost down on composite decking
Make sure you measure carefully and speak to your local experts before ordering any materials. Over-ordering will leave you with spare materials, and under-ordering will cost you more in delivery. So measure twice and order once.
- Pick the board length that suits your decking project. If your deck is 4.5m long, 4.8m boards will save you joining shorter lengths and reduce the amount of waste you have.
- Keep your decking at ground level where you can. A low deck will cost less in framing and balustrade materials.
- Build it yourself if you know how. Labour is often as much as the boards. Our guide to fitting composite decking walks you through it step by step. But if you'd rather have it fitted, we can put you in touch with professional installers we trust who fit decking across Sheffield.
- Collect your order. Click and collect is free at Hillsborough Fencing.

Richard Putland
Great Company!! I have used Hillsborough Fencing several times over the last few years mainly for deck boards. I have never had a warped or badly twisted board and the delivery service has always been quick and the driver courteous. I would happily recommend them to anyone, and I will be making another purchase very soon for fencing products.
Chris Taylor
Really impressed with these guys. Have placed 2 online orders now. Both delivered the next morning. Quality and price of timber great as was communication and the delivery. I made a mistake and over ordered the number of decking boards required. The guys who delivered happily just took the boards back and a refund was processed before I even had a chance to call the office. Would totally recommend.
Frequently asked questions about composite decking costs
How much is composite decking per m² in Sheffield?
Standard composite decking boards cost from around £39 per m² at Hillsborough Fencing, or around £43.50 per m² for 3D Woodgrain composite decking.
Across the UK, boards range from under £40 to over £90 per m², depending on the brand and whether they're solid or capped.
How much does it cost to have composite decking fitted?
Fitting currently costs around £40 to £90 per m² on top of the materials, with a fully fitted composite deck coming to somewhere between £90 and £200 per m², depending on the type of boards, the height and shape of your deck and what you will be using it for.
Is composite decking worth the money?
If you are planning on living in your home for a long time, then absolutely. Although it will cost more than a timber deck, you will save time and money in the coming years maintaining and repairing it.
How long does composite decking last?
Composite decking should last over 25 years, compared with 10 to 15 years for a well-maintained timber deck. How long it will last will depend on the frame underneath, as this is normally the first thing to start rotting.
We always recommend using high-grade pressure-treated timber to give your composite decking the best chance of lasting more than 25 years without the need for ongoing repairs.
Is composite decking slippery?
If you buy textured composite boards like our HillDeck range, then they shouldn’t be. They are designed to grip well in the wet, and they don't grow algae as easily as timber.
Any deck can still get slippery with wet leaves, moss or ice. So always make sure to be careful when walking on your decking, even if you buy textured composite boards from Hillsborough Fencing.
Why is composite decking so expensive?
Composite boards are made from a mix of recycled wood fibres and plastic, which will cost more to produce than timber boards. You're paying more upfront for a board that won’t need treating and lasts much longer than timber decking.
Where can I buy composite decking in Sheffield?
You can buy HillDeck composite decking from Hillsborough Fencing on Livesey Street in Sheffield. We deliver across Sheffield, or you can click and collect for free. Call us on 0114 234 3924 with your decking measurements, or browse our composite decking online.
