Are you looking to install a new garden fence? But you don’t know what tools you need. Well, you're in luck. Here at Hillsborough Fencing, we have a range of tools to help make your garden project easier.
Other than the materials themselves, the most important thing you will need are proper fencing tools to make your life easier. Check out some of the best tools we have to offer and how they can help you.
Before you start building your fence and commit to buying loads of materials you don’t need. It’s best to start by planning where your fence will be going. To help you understand what materials you need to buy and exactly how much of each one.
Measuring Tape
The best way to accurately work out the number of fence posts and panels you’ll need and at what length is with a measuring tape. You can also use measuring wheels to help you work out the total length. However, we find that using a tap measure will give you a more accurate measurement for each post and fence panel.
Once you have worked out the desired total length, you can work out how many panels you will need to fill the gap. Our standard length is 180 cm wide, or 5 feet 10. So most gardens will need around 4–6 fence panels per side to fill this space. You can view a range of calculations we have done at the end to help work out the desired length for your home and garden.

Pegs and strings
Once you have measured out and worked out the space you will need to build your fence, the next step is to mark this area out. This can be done in two ways: using garden spray paint or pegs and string. We recommend using string and pegs, as they're more accurate and easier to remove once completed.
Using the pegs and string, mark out the total boundary length, and use the pegs to mark where each post will go as well as the start and end of your fence. This will help you when building the garden fence, as you can easily dig the holes for your posts all at once rather than waiting for each panel to be installed.
Tools to Build Your Fencing Project
Now that you’ve planned the foundations of your fence, you’ll need a reliable set of fencing tools to install it. Use the list below to ensure you have everything you need for a successful installation.
Posthole Digger
Posthole diggers are designed to make posthole digging simple and are also suitable for removing debris in your garden. Small rocks or roots are easily picked up and moved without the need for any other tools.
Heavy-duty fibreglass and wooden handles ensure our posthole diggers are hard-wearing and weather-resistant. The long handle length (1475 mm or 58 in) makes digging deep holes an easier task.
The posthole digger will allow you to quickly dig down without the need to make your hole wider than necessary. It allows you to dig straight down and easily take out large amounts of soil without the risk of the hole clasping. You easily reach the desired depth of 600 mm with no problems.
Level
Before securing your fence posts in place, you need to make sure they're vertically sound to avoid a weak structure and any sagging in the future. Making sure your posts are level will create a strong, professional-looking fence for years to come.
Our Stanley FatMaxTM magnetic levels are precise and tough, equipped with limpet-like holding power. They come with a lifetime warranty and have shock-absorbing end caps to protect the level even if it is dropped. This means that you can work hard and not have to worry about protecting your equipment from accidental falls or knocks.
Post Mix
Now, strictly speaking, this isn’t a tool. However, using Post Mix is an easy and reliable way to secure your posts. Simply fill your fence post holes 1/3 full with water, then pour in your post concrete mix until no standing water is visible. This will then harden around your fence post and secure it in place.
Our Post Mix is a ready-to-use blend of cement, sand, and additives, ideal for fixing wooden, metal, and concrete posts. Simply add water with no mixing required, and the post-mix sets in 10 minutes. This extremely useful product comes in handy 20 kg weatherproof and tear-resistant plastic bags.
Wood Saw
One tool that you won’t always need but could come in handy is the Bahco 244-XT wood saw, which allows you to easily cut through large timber posts or panels to make sure they are cut to the desired length.
The Bahco 244-XT Blue Saw is suitable for cutting coarse or thick wood materials. It has a unique XT-toothing detail and hardpoint teeth for long-lasting sharpness. The two sets of teeth work in conjunction with each other: one set cuts and the second set clears with each stroke.
Deterrent Spikes
Once your fence is completed, one accessory that might be worth adding isdeterrent spikes. These will keep your garden safe, keeping unwanted visitors out. Our Fencemate spikes are made from a triple row of pointed cones, moulded from polypropylene with excellent UV weathering resistance. The points are staggered for maximum effect.
Each strip is 500 mm long, 45 mm wide, and 15 mm high, which delivers maximum deterrence but minimum harm. The unique double-hinge design allows it to be formed neatly on fence tops, pipes, and other irregular surfaces.
But use them with great care when unpacking, fitting, or cleaning this product. Keep and fit away from the reach of children. If the points are too sharp for your intended use, simply blunt them using a rasp, file, or coarse abrasive sanding sheet.
Customers must satisfy themselves that no harm will be caused by this product and should display a warning notice advising that an anti-intruder device has been fitted.
