Benefits of Growing Your Own

It’s National Healthy Eating Week! We know healthy eating can seem like an expensive, boring habit, but there are plenty of ways around this and eating fresh has LOADS of benefits!

First things first, let’s combat the expense, grow your own! Granted, you can’t grow everything in your garden, but growing some vegetables will definitely help your pocket. Buy some seeds, a few planters and get growing! Fresh veggies from your garden are higher in nutrients than the ones that have travelled thousands of miles to get to your local shelves!

Not only are your home-grown vegetables more nutritious, but they’re also rich in anti-oxidants (which prohibit the oxidation of other molecules in the body like free radicals – cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease etc.), vitamin C (helps the body form and maintain connective tissues including bones, blood vessels and skin), vitamin A (helps organs work properly) and folate (needed for your body’s cells to divide)!

You can learn new skills about your diet and what your body needs to function healthily. You may begin with little-to-no knowledge on what vegetables to plant but just go with what seems easy, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce etc. But as you get into the hobby and learn about what you enjoy, what makes you feel good and what has the most nutritional value, you will find yourself extremely knowledgeable on what to plant when, where and how!
